Shootwright is a free screenshot app for Mac that lets you mark up captures and get them into Slack in a couple of seconds. It also turns your whole screen into a whiteboard: press ⌥⇧D while you share your screen, draw what you mean, and the ink fades away by itself.

01 — What it does
Three jobs, one shortcut each.
Shootwright sits in your menu bar and stays out of the way until you press a shortcut. Grab an area, mark it up, drop it into Slack. Or draw straight onto your screen.
Mark up
Arrows, shapes, text, highlighter, numbered steps, pixelate and crop, each a single keypress. Put the result on a gradient backdrop when it's going into slides or a post.

Draw on screen
One shortcut puts a clear layer over every display. Circle the bug, point at the button, underline the number. Everyone on the call sees it, and a few seconds later it's gone.

02 — Screen Ink
Draw on your screen while you share it.
You're sharing your screen and someone asks "where?". Press the shortcut, circle it, and keep talking. With vanishing ink on, each stroke fades three seconds after you draw it, so you never stop to erase.

The ink sits on top of your real screen, so it appears in every full-screen share and recording.
Vanishing or sticky ink
Strokes fade by themselves after a delay you choose. Press V to keep them until you're done.
Laser pointer
Press L for a glowing trail that follows your cursor and fades as it goes.

Six colours on keys 1 to 6. Hold Shift for straight lines and perfect squares.
Keep a copy
Press ⌘S to screenshot the screen with your drawing on it before the ink fades.

Quick Access overlay
After each capture a thumbnail slides in. Drag it straight into Slack, Mail or Figma, or copy, save, pin or annotate it.
Copy text from anything
Select any part of the screen and its text goes to your clipboard, even text inside images and videos. It runs on your Mac.
Pin to screen
Float a screenshot above every window while you work. Scroll on it to fade it and trace over it.
Clean window shots
Click a window to capture just that window with transparent corners, even when other windows overlap it.
Numbered steps
Click, click, click. The counter numbers itself, so step-by-step guides are quick to make.
Pixelate
Hide emails, names and tokens before you share. The pixelation is saved into the file itself.
Backdrops
Put any screenshot on a gradient with rounded corners and a soft shadow. Six presets, one click.
Crop & undo
Crop with rule-of-thirds guides. Every edit can be undone, and you can still move and restyle any mark later.
04 — Stays on your Mac
We left out the parts you didn't ask for.
There's no account and no upload button, and Shootwright doesn't record video. It takes a screenshot, lets you mark it up, and saves the file to a folder you pick. It makes no network requests at all.

Questions about Shootwright
Will people on my call see the ink?
Yes, when you share your whole screen. Screen Ink draws on a transparent layer on top of your real screen, so it shows in Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Slack huddles, and in recordings made with QuickTime or OBS. If you share a single window instead, the other app only sees that window, so share your full screen when you plan to draw.
Is Shootwright free?
Yes. Shootwright is free to download and use on macOS 14 Sonoma or later. There is no account and nothing to sign up for.
Why does it need Screen Recording permission?
macOS requires that permission for any app that reads pixels from the screen, and a screenshot tool has to. Screen Ink doesn't need it, because it only draws on top. Shootwright makes no network requests, so nothing it captures leaves your Mac.
Can I keep the built-in ⌘⇧4?
Yes. Shootwright's defaults use ⌥⇧ so they don't clash with macOS. If you'd rather Shootwright took over ⌘⇧4, turn the macOS shortcut off in System Settings › Keyboard › Keyboard Shortcuts › Screenshots, then record ⌘⇧4 in Shootwright's settings.
Where do my screenshots go?
They go to your Desktop by default. You can pick any folder and choose PNG or JPEG in Settings, and you can have every capture copied to the clipboard automatically.
Does it record video or upload to the cloud?
No, on purpose. Shootwright only does screenshots, markup and on-screen ink. Leaving out video and cloud features keeps the app small and fast, and nothing you capture leaves your Mac.
What Macs does it run on?
Any Mac running macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon or Intel. It supports multiple displays, Retina and non-Retina screens, and full-screen apps.
